2024 Fair Haven Soccer Tournament Day

24th Annual Fair Haven Soccer Tournament Day

Saturday November 02, 2024 at Fair Haven Fields

Coach’s Guidelines for the Tournament:

Format for all groups EXCEPT GRADE 7/8: The tournament will be a round-robin where each team plays each other team in its age/gender group one time.  Game duration varies by age group and number of games to be played in each bracket (see schedule).  A win is worth 3 points, a tie is worth 1 point, and no points are awarded for a loss.  A scoreboard will be kept at the Referee’s tent, which will be located between fields 12 & 13, to record game results and points for each team.  At the end of round-robin play, the teams will be placed in order based on the following rules and tiebreakers:

1) most points 3) goal differential 5) goals allowed
2) head-to-head record (break 2-way ties only) 4) goals scored 6) If necessary: PKs (3 shooters)

The 1st and 2nd place teams will play in the finals (regardless of head-to-head results).

If a game is tied:

  1. The field player is removed and there is a 3-minute period. Note that the position is removed.

  1. If the score is still tied, then one additional player is removed from each team and there is an additional 3 minute sudden-death (Golden Goal) period played. The first team to score wins.

If still tied after the “golden goal” overtime (2nd over-time) there will be a shootout: 5 shots per team from the penalty spot (standard PK), 5 different shooters, goalie substitutions allowed.  If still tied after the 5v5 shootout, additional shooters continue as necessary using a 1v1 format until one team outscores the other.  All players on the team, including the goalie and substitutes are eligible to take a PK during the shootout.  Note: a player may not shoot a second time until all players on that team have shot.

Game Time and Substitutions: Round-robin games will be played with a running clock. Either team may substitute on a throw-in or goal kick. Coaches are encouraged to get all their players a reasonable amount of playing time in each game. For the Finals, there will be two halves with a short halftime. Grade 3/4 round-robin games will be 20 minutes, followed by a 30-minute Final. Grade 5/6 round-robin games will be 25 minutes, followed by a 40-minute Final.

Players must play at least half of each game.  This is the same as the league rule for regular season games.  We realize that this might not always work out for each of the very short games that are played in the preliminary round, given the difficulties of managing subs in very short games.  Coaches must make up for a players playing time shortage in the next game.  Finals are longer than the games in the preliminary round, so coaches must adhere to this rule without fail.

Mercy Rule:  The mercy rule for tournament games is a 4-goal differential.  This is lower than the limit of 7 for regular season games, since tournament games are shorter. If a team wins by more than 4 goals, the extra goals will be ignored for purposes of tournament tiebreakers.

Schedule:  See the schedule for the tournament schedule by age group.  It will be important to start on time.

Prizes:  Players from the winning team in each age group will get a TOURNAMENT DAY CHAMPIONS long sleeve shirt and first place medal.

Uniforms:  We will provide pinnies, if needed, for one team to wear during the game for one team (i.e., the team listed int the “Pinnies” column. We will have enough pinnies so that all substitutes have them while they are not in the game to minimize substitution time.

Concession Stand:  The concession stand will be open all day. Let your teams know and encourage them to stop by the stand.

Clean-up:  Large trash bags will be provided to help pick up debris from the field area.  Everyone should pitch in on this.  It’s important to keep the fields clean.  Please ask your team to do their part.
